How to Look Stylish and Classic Whatever Your Age

It's the wedding season and hundreds of mums, aunties and grannies out there are agonising over their outfit or their accessories or their hats. And the recent spell of typically bad English summer weather only makes it worse - now you also have to think about wearing a jacket to keep warm and the right pair of shoes in case it rains.

If you haven't got a wedding to go to then perhaps you're going to the Races or a summer concert or even just a family barbecue. Whatever the occasion, everyone loves having a special event to look forward to. We all want to look our best too, but very often the older we get the less confidence we have in our appearance. Deciding what to wear should be fun but can instead turn in to a crisis of indecision. If that sounds like you read on for some classy style tips that will help you pick out the perfect outfit for your special occasion and help you look your absolute best.

First of all, if you have already trawled through your wardrobe and nothing has grabbed you - then go clothes shopping for something new. You'll not feel a million dollars in anything you are not dying to wear. Being short of time is no excuse - online shopping is so easy and there are a host of wonderful mail order catalogues out there - have a quick glance through that latest David Nieper Collection for example for some instant summer inspiration.
Now that you're in the right frame of mind to dress to impress you'll need to know how to achieve it - luckily that's not difficult at all!

The first thing is to forget your usual buying rules! All too often we all get stuck in a rut without even realising it and end up buying the same kind of things time and time again. By wearing the same thing and the same colours all the time, then you begin to blend in to the background and people simply stop noticing you. Make this the occasion to break out and really been seen!
Don't be afraid to be adventurous with different patterns but be aware that as we get older, to look classy, less is more, so stick to one pattern on each outfit and don't pair a spotty blouse with a flowery skirt or a striped scarf with a geometric top.

Whatever size you are, tailoring is essential especially on the largest part of your body. Our instinct is to cover up wobbly bits with large flowing tops and baggy trousers but they will actually make you seem fatter not thinner! You will look better in fitted clothes that follow the contours of your figure and tops that create the impression of a waist. Wearing well-tailored clothes will sculpt your body into shape and give you instant class. A fitted shirt is a true fashion classic that will go with everything and give you years of use. Similarly, adding a fitted coat or a sharply cut jacket is a great way to look really smart and will take years off you. If you're curvy, then show off that waist. The perfect outfit for you is a long flowing dress which you can cinch in at the waist with a belt.

Be selective in your choice of fabrics. Women over forty should never wear anything that looks or feels cheap. Style comes with age and experience so show it! Chose silk and cotton, wools and linens or blends of elegant fabrics that drape over the body better and last longer. You are a sophisticated woman and the fabric you wear should reflect it.
Learn a few fashion rules such that horizontal stripes add weight while vertical ones add height; wear detail or bright colours or patterns on the slimmest part of your body as they draw the eye; dark colours absorb more light so are more slimming than pale clothes; wearing the same colour or tone of colour top to toe will make you appear taller and slimmer and high heels are sexy.

If you think flared, wide legged or boot cut trousers are only for the young then think again! These are the most flattering styles to wear and are as practical as straight legs. Don't be afraid of anything you think is too modern - try how they look on you and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Take your own style icon with you when you go shopping. I don't mean this literally but figuratively. Think of someone who you really admire for the way they look - this can be a friend, sister, daughter or even a celebrity - anyone who you think dresses well with style and grace. Next time you pick out an outfit, before you pay for it or even try it on, ask yourself 'will my style icon look good in this?' If the answer's no then PUT IT BACK ON THE SHELF. If you don't think it's good enough for them then why is it good enough for you? This won't always help you get the right outfit but it will certainly stop you from making too many fashion faux pas.
Handbags are important because they show you have self respect and you really don't need to spend a fortune on getting a classy little number that will complement your outfit. Select a colour that enhances the colours in your clothes but don't stress about matching shoes unless they're both in a neutral colour. Matching shoes and handbags are slightly passé and can add years to your age.

Details make all the difference so, on the day, check your nail polish, get your make up done for you, have your hair cut and coloured and stand up tall and straight. The right posture can take half a stone off your weight.

Finally don't forget your underwear! No-one else may be able to see it, but the perfect outfit should be worn over nothing less than beautiful lingerie. No woman is ever too old to wear matching lingerie, so treat yourself from time to time to something a bit more special than M&S - try David Nieper.co.uk for a gorgeous range of bras, panties and corsets to suit every shape. With autumn approaching, something that will make you feel good at night time too is a must. Consider a new nightie or as a treat a nightshirt.
Look good and you'll feel good and that means you'll have a jolly good time too!
